Courage is to be brave and persevere even when you are scared. It is an important theme for the "Chinese Cinderella" because she has to have courage to go on with her daily life. She shows she is courageous by wearing her medal from school every day even though she knows her siblings might pick on her because of it. Also because she doesn't back down even when people say she is bad luck or she is stupid. Family relationships are important because without it, there wouldn't be any love. Without love in a family, it wouldn't truly be a family; just a bunch of people living together. In the protagonist's family, they don't have deep relationships with the her. They don't even live with her in the house. She has to live with her aunt Baba. They only talk during meals, and their conversations are just plain and simple. They don't talk about stuff they did that day, what were their highs and lows, what book they are reading; it is all on the surface. There isn't a strong relationship with her and her father because when he sees her he sees his late wife's murderer. So she cannot even begin to have a relationship with him. When you are lonely, you don't feel loved. You feel like you're abandoned and stranded. It is another theme in the "Chinese Cinderella" because a lot of times she would feel lonely. Since she was labeled a disgrace, her family would not treat her like they would anybody else, they treated her like an outcast. That would make her feel lonely. Another reason why she would feel lonely is when she got an award for getting the medal for the longest time. At her school they had a celebration for all the students who got the medal for the longest time. They had a ceremony and she got a certificate, it was exciting for her. Until she realized that no one was there to support her. Not even Aunt Baba came, sister also stayed home from school that day. She didn't want to be there. She felt lonely. To have a good self-esteem is to have confidence in yourself that you can do anything. In the book I do not think the protagonist has a high self-esteem. The reason is because her family has said to her all her life that she killed her mother and she was bad luck. To her family, she was a disgrace. That brought her self-esteem down. She did not have confidence in herself, she got put down every time she was happy. For example when her father congratulated her on getting the school medal, her siblings grimaced at her and toke her dessert. She has a low self-esteem.
I believe that family relationships are an important theme in the story “Chinese Cinderella” because, in the story, the main character/ narrator, Adeline (Jun-ling 峻嶺), is not treated well by her family. Especially when she and her family move in with their “Niang” or stepmother. They are restricted to the third floor and forced to share rooms with siblings while Niang’s children are spoiled rotten. Getting anything they want, not having to share rooms, and eating anything at anytime is not fair. Also, later on in the story, Adeline’s feats such as leading the class and winning class president was totally ignored by her parents. Her family has bad family relations.
Courage is important in “Chinese Cinderella” because Adeline (Jun-ling 峻嶺) stands up to Niang and her father in desperate measures. For example, When Niang came home; Susan (Youngest Sister) didn’t want Niang to hold her so Niang began to beat her. Though Adeline knew that she would get in trouble and though she didn’t favor Susan, she cried out to Niang to stop. Later on, when her pet duck was going to get eaten by Jackie, the guard dog, she knew she could have gotten hurt but she jumped in the middle of the attack and tried to save his life, knowing the harsh consequences. Adeline has great courage.
To Adeline (Jun-ling 峻嶺), self esteem is very important because it makes her feel better about herself. When her step mother sent her off to St. Joseph’s when she was eleven, people thought she was dumb because the second oldest in her class was eight years old and she never raised her hand in class. Another thing is that, when she was sent to another boarding school in Hong Kong, her classmates teased her because most of them were rich in their newest European clothing; she wore worn brown dress two sizes too small, old dirty tennis shoes, and her hair was hardly ever brushed. But, to heighten her self esteem, she thought about how smart she was, skipping a grade at a young age. She has some self esteem.
Loneliness ties into this story because Adeline (Jun-ling 峻嶺) feels it when she is around her family. For example, she was sent off to St. Joseph’s and had no contact with her family for six months after visiting them only once. Also, when her Ye Ye died, she knew that she would never see him again so it made her feel lonely and she cried when the rest of her family just sat stony faced. Adeline feels lonely a lot, especially when she loses someone dear like Nai Nai or Ye Ye.
I think that loneliness is important in the story. I think that loneliness is important in the story because in the story " Chinese Cinderella" after her first day at her new school no one comes to pick her up and she is left there sad and alone. Loneliness is also important because when she called her father to come pick her up he didn't sound the least bit concerned about her, which made her even sadder than before that no one had noticed she was gone. That is why I think loneliness is important in the story.
I think family relationships is an important theme in this story because Adeline is treated badly by most of her family. Her brothers and sisters think she is bad luck because her mom died giving birth to her. They put her down and blame her for her mother's death. In the story, her older sister takes two of her lychee. Then three of her brothers follow the older sister and take the rest of her lychee leaving Adeline with none. Adeline says her step-mother thinks her birth children are superior to the other children, but only likes the oldest daughter from Adeline's mother (the one who took her lychee). She received a medal from school for leading her class and when they were at the dinner table her father asks her about it. She explains to him then he stands up, pats her on the head and leaves the table, barely acknowledging her accomplishment. Aunty Baba, Ye Ye (her grandpa) and Nai Nai (her grandma) are the only ones who don't blame her for her mom's death or ignore her. She talks and spends alot of time with her Aunty Baba. I think she comes from a very dysfunctional family where her step-mother's children get everything they want and she doesn't really care about the other children.
I feel that courage is an extremely key point in the story. Adeline, the main protagonist in the story, had a lot of courage, despite the harsh living conditions she had. She was the only one of her siblings that had the courage to stand up to their stepmother, Niang. In the story, Adeline's school was very far from her home, but her parents refused to give any of the children money for the tram. All the children were in defiance, and Niang said they could get tram fare if they apologized to her for their bad behavior, even though they did nothing wrong. All the children walked to school and back every day. However, as the weather conditions worsened and the children began to wear out, one by one all the children except Adeline gave in. This showed that she had the courage to stand by what she believed in, and she had more courage to brave to brave through things her siblings couldn't. Later in the story, Adeline had become such a trouble in the eyes of her mother, she was sent back from Shanghai, where she was living, back to Tianjin. This was an especially bad time to be in Tianjin because the communists were coming and taking over, and they didn't like the Chinese, so they killed a lot of them. Sending Adeline to Tianjin was like sending her to her death sentence, which showed how little they cared for her and how much they wanted to be rid of her. It took a lot of courage to live through each day in her boarding school with the nuns, because she was facing certain death by staying at the school. she required courage to continue to stay and remain calm and hopeful. Adeline was eventually moved to a new boarding school, where she had no contact with her parents. She had very little clothes that were too small or torn up, and no food or love from her parents. Despite winning many awards for her accomplishments, she never had anyone there to congratulate her at her ceremonies. Everyone in the school knew that she was unwanted, and looked down on her. Her only escape was through reading books, and she was looked down upon she looked less appealing than everyone else. She had to have courage to persevere and not listen to what other people were saying about her.
Another example for self esteem for Olivia's post was when she was in a boarding school in Shanghai and all her friends were playing a game of writing something that they love about themselves, and Adeline left her paper blank. When they asked why, she said that she didn't love anything about herself, and she thought she was hideous.
Giving a different perspective on Crystal's post on self esteem, I don't believe she had any at all. When I wrote my post, i shared an example of when her friends were all playing a game of saying something they love about themselves, but Adeline didn't say anything and said she hated everything about herself, so I don't think she had very much self esteem.
Family relationships is a important theme to the "Chinese Cinderella" because in her there are different relationships. For example when Nai Nai died, Niang became the head of the house hold. And when Wu Mei and her brothers and sisters came to live with their father and Niang she toke control. The relationship between Niang and her step children is not good, there is no love. Niang does love them, they don't even mean anything to her, she only loves her own two children. When the step children get nothing and no allowance, her children get money and lavish things. Another example of a family relationship in the story is between Wu Mei and her Aunt Baba. Her Aunt Baba truly loves her. For example when Wu Mei gets her grades back, her Aunt puts it in a safe box because she cares about her grades. Wu Mei even wrote about her Aunt in a paper for school in titled "My Best Friend". Courage is also a component in the theme because Wu Mei had courage when nobody else did. For instance, when Aunt Baba brought little sister to the new house, she didn't recognize her own mother. Niang got mad and eventually started beating her. No one did anything to stop it, she just continued on. Everyone just watched it play it out. But, when Wu Mei couldn't stand it anymore, she stood up to Niang. She yelled at her "Stop it! She is just a baby!" She needed courage to do that. Another reason why it is a part of the theme is because Wu Mei refused to give up. She did not want to give into Niang and say that she was wrong to borrow money from Yeye and Aunt Baba for the tram to go to school. So she has to walk to and from school when everyone else toke the money. She has courage.
Olivia: Courage- I agree with you on her having courage, standing up like that to her step mother, Niang. Also, another key detail that I left out, that she cannot ride the tram to and from school like her siblings. Family Relationships- I agree with what you said about how there are different relationships in "Chinese Cinderella". When the Aunt put her grades in box, it was very caring. (ONly thing: her name is Jun-ling)
I think that loneliness is an important theme in this story because Adeline seem to be on her own most of the time in this story. One detail from the story is when she was standing in the hallway waiting for someone to take her to school, and no one came. The other children had ways of transportation, except her. Another detail from the story is when Adeline ended school, and no one came to get her. She ended up walking, getting lost, and calling her father that didn't even realize she was gone. Having no one realizing she was gone shows that she is really on her own until Aunt Baba comes to the new house.
I think that the family relationships are a big part of the theme in the story because it seemed that in Adeline's family didn't care for her. One example is that one day when she was going to school she was so excited to leave her family. She thought that her school was the only place were she belongs more than at her home.
Another way that you can tell that the family relationships are important because when her father went missing Adelines family set up posters for any clue of him. Even if he was dead there was a money reward for him. But since nobody has seen him for past a year nobody even thought about him anymore. If it were me in that situation I would still feel that same sad feeling of the first day that I found out he was missing.
The next reason that I think that the theme is family relationships is because when she had broke the record of the most class medals in a year none of her family members came with her to tell her good job or pat her on the head.
The last reason why I think family relationships is an important theme because when her grandmother died her family set up everything for her. They set up a Funeral for her grandma. The relation this family ever had was starting to fade away like how papers fly in the great wind.
I dissagree with Jodeci's perspective because although Adeline seemed to be alone much of the time she still had her Aunt Baba that cared for her. She also had the people at her school.
I believe that loneliness is an important theme to the story because Wu Mei, like Jodeci said, is on her own a lot in the story. It seems like no matter how hard she tries, no one acknowledges her positively. They left her all alone to find her way to school, and never came to pick her up. Her father didn't even care that she was gone, and expected a first grader to learn how to use a map. Niang treats her horribly like when Wu Mei stopped her from beating her daughter. She screamed at Wu Mei and told her that she would be despised and never forgiven. After Aunt Baba came, things didn't change. Niang was still cruel, she yelled at everyone and Aunt Baba didn't do anything about it.
I think loneliness is an important theme in the story. I think loneliness is an important theme because after everyone ate breakfast no one was there to take Adeline to school and the only person that would take Adeline to school was the cook, but he had to do it because she started to cry. Even though it wasn't his job to do it. This was right after they moved into fathers house in Hong Kong. Another reason loneliness is an important theme is because after school when their is no one to pick Adelind up she ended up trying to walk home, but got lost and had to call father but, he didn't even notice that she was gone. That is why Adeline's life is very lonesome.
I think courage and family relationships are an important theme to the book the Chinese Cinderella because when the family just got the guard dog Jackie she was scaried of her because she was constintly barking at her. The dad told her to act like your self and you will be fine. The second detail about courage is to ask someone for a ride because her family forgot to take her to school, so she asked the cook for a ride and he said " take my bike over there,". The third detail is she was alone at the store at five years old with out her mother there to help her. She noticed that it was a bad thing because a lady with a red face said " wheres your mom its late, its bad for a young girl to be out here by her self.
I believe that loneliness is the most important theme in the story. I believe loneliness is the most important because when it was time for he to go to school nobody took her, and totally forgot about her. I believe the main theme for the book "Chinese Cinderella" is loneliness. Adeline is always picked on at home. When she started her first day at her new school no one dropped her off. She was all by herself. Luckily someone felt bad for her and dropped her off while he was heading somewhere. Even when her school ended she ended up alone again. Nobody knew she was even gone. She wondered around alone and scared. Another reason why the main theme of this story is loneliness is because she was never trusted by her family. When her father picked Adeline up he gave her a map of the area. She is kind of young so it would be hard for her to read the map. No one volunteered to help her out. She had to ask one of her family members to teach her.
