I believe that self-esteem is the theme that is most important to the story, because the way Adeline feels about herself affects everything that she does. She is always feeling belittled by her siblings, because they treat her as if she is nothing and they blame the bad things on her. Since she doesn’t receive much affection at home, at school she pushes herself into doing well. The attention and praises her teachers and classmates give Adeline is what helps her feel better about herself. Another reason why self-esteem is the theme is because her confidence level is affected by the way her family treats her. When her Aunt Baba praises her, her confidence level is boosted. In the story when her family forgets to pick her up, her confidence level falters. She feels lost, terrible, and embarrassed that she was so easily forgotten about all at the same time. Lastly, the type of person she is and was becoming depended on her self-esteem. Adeline didn’t think very much of herself in the story, but at school people respected her, because she was very cerebral. She didn’t really know the feeling, but it made her feel better when she was being accepted for who she was. Self-esteem is the most important theme to the story, because Adeline's feelings and confidence affected everything she did.
I think the theme of the story is self-esteem, in the story Adeline is an unwanted child. She is cruely treated by her sisters and brother while at school the kids are nice to her. Even though she is badly treated by her sibblings Adeline still goes on, and won't let her sisters and brothers drag her down.
I believe family relationships is the theme that is most important to the story because the family don't really pay attention to Adeline. The brothers and sisters make fun of her and make trouble. The second reason why i think family relationships is the theme for "Chinese Cinderella" is because her stepmother, Niang is really mean to her and very strict. When Niang and Adeline's father moved to Shanghai, the children were not allowed to invite any of their friends over to their home. Also they were only allowed to enter and leave the house through the back door only. The front gate leading out to the garden was reserved for Adeline's father's guest. So was the living room. That is why I think family relationships is the theme for this story.
I believe that courage is an important theme because Adeline steps up to her mother and never gives u. For example, at the beginning of the story she started getting awards for leading the class but, Adenines siblings started getting jealous of all the attention she was getting from father so, they treated her more badly by taking her food and calling her worthless. Although, that didn't stop her Adeline just kept going and wanted to make her father proud. Another example is when her step mother Niang started going spoiling HER children and not her step children so, Adeline joined with her siblings and started thinking of plots on how to stop her rampage of power. My final example is when Adeline faced long walks home and endured storms to help her Aunt and Grandpa not get in any trouble from Niang. Adeline had a lot of courage.
I have to agree with tiare because family relations was a key point in the story. Like when the step mom Niang got good clothes for her children and gave junk clothes for her step children, the step children all complained and joined forces against Niang. They even brought Adeline in there rebel party which brought them closer deciding how to make Niang stop.
The theme of the story that I think is loneliness. It is loneliness because Adeline’s family doesn’t care for her and leaves her out on everything. When her stepmother pays the children tram fare Adeline is the only one that doesn’t get any. Big sister will always come up to her room and count it right in front of Adeline out loud. The other is that her sisters and brothers blame her for their mothers death so they leave Adeline all by her self. Only aunt Baba would take care and love her just the way she is. Her father always loved Adeline, but since Nai Nai died nobody knew who would be head of the house so Niang the stepmother took charge so she made rules that would leave most of the time for everybody alone, especialy Adeline. The rules were like “No friends are aloud to come over.” Or “Stay in your rooms and don’t come down to your parents floor.” They were very strict parents.
I also agree with Scott when he agreed on Tiare's paper because the story's theme was on family relationships because when the family treats someone in their family badly then that shows a bad family relationship. Between the sisters and brothers Adeline and them began too have a good relationship between each other because of their stepmother Niang. The stepmother treats them all differently compared to her own two children. She gives everyone else lousy Chinese new year gifts and feed them junk food when she feeds her children food and they throw it off the roof.
I believe that courage is the most important theme in this story because throughout the story Adeline needs alot of courage in order to do some of the things she did and/or said. In the story she was left alone at her school for a long time and no one came to pick her up. She felt unwanted and wondering "if anyone even noticed that she wasn't home". As a result Adeline needed courage in order to attempt to find and memorize her way back home throughout the crowded city of Shanghai. Another example when courage was an important theme in the story was when Niang was beating up little sister. Adeline couldn't stand seeing her stepmother beat up her little sister so she stood up and told her stepmother not to beat her little sister up anymore and that she is only a baby. Adeline knew that she shouldn't have done anything but she had the courage to step up to Niang in order to stop Niang from beating up her little sister even more. That is why courage is the most important theme because it took Adeline alot of courage in order walk the streets alone and stand up to her stepmother.
I have to agree with Shawna that self-esteem is also an important theme because in the story Adeline needs self-esteem as much as she needs courage. I agree that in the story Adeline's self-esteem goes up and down depending on what she is doing and where she is. For example when Adeline was playing the numbers game with her older brother her self-esteem went up because she felt good that her brother would spend the whole afternoon with her.
I believe that loneliness is important to the story because as it progress, her siblings acted like Adeline was nothing. When she tries her best in school, her big sister would interrogate Adeline about things that the big sister would learn now. I think Big Sister is just nagging her about the things Adeline does not know. Also her siblings would get jealous of Adeline for getting a medal every week. As a sister or brother, they should support her and congratulate her. Instead of getting compliments, Adeline gets torture. Adeline just wants to be accepted by her family. Even though she is a burden to the family, they should let the hatred go away. It is not fair for Adeline to suffer the pain her whole life if you might need her someday. Another detail from the story that supports the theme is when the parents moved. Although Japan patrolled the Tianjin province and soldiers were looking for the father, the parents should have stayed with the Adeline. If you were a parent, you would not leave your child behind. The father should have stayed with Adeline because he is the only person in the family (besides the relatives) supporting her. Without him, Adeline would never have the chance to enjoy life.
I agree with Tiare’s perspective because family relationships really do run throughout the story. Adeline try’s her best to get her family to except her. Her siblings are really mean to her and they don’t believe in her. They don’t treat her like family and they don’t think very highly of her. Her relationship with her family is a struggle because her family don’t pay attention to her. On the other hand, her relationship with her friends and teachers is the complete opposite than her relationship with her family. Her friends and teachers is the closet thing to family for Adeline. They give her love and support and congratulate her to succeed in school.
I also agree with Shawna, self-esteem was a big part in the story, but I also believe that the theme is about courage because Adeline get’s treated like she’s nothing when she’s at home with her family. At school, her friends and teachers show her love and support and they treat her like family. This helps her to believe in her self and summon her courage to do well in school and succeed greatly. When ever her family knocks her down, she doesn’t give up, she fights back. I also believe that this is one of her strengths to get her through life.
Loneliness could also be a theme in the story because Adeline is basically on her own. Adeline has talents, but this is unrecognized by most of her family members. Since her family don’t show her any love and affection, she has to battle it out her self. When ever her siblings pick on her, she has no one there to scold them and help her out. She has to suffer everyday knowing that she will never be apart of her family. But, no matter how hard her life is, she just keeps her head up high, and never gives up.
Even though Adeline is discriminated and neglected by her family members, she try’s her best and not let it get to her. This is what I admire the most about her. She doesn’t let anyone and anything take her down.
To me i think the theme of the story "chinese cinderella" is family realtionships. I think its about this theme because in the story all it talks about is Adeline's family and her relationships with them. One detail from the story from chapter four and onwards is Adeline always wanted and longed for her dad's love so she always wanted to do good in school. This supports my theme for the story because by Adeline wanting her dad's love and him sometimes giving it to her when she does good in school and encouraging her is a relationship they share with eachother. Another reason why my theme "family relationships" fits this book is because in the story is in the story her siblings always abuse her and put her down. They always hated her and thought Aeline was taking away their shine. this supports my theme because this shows Adeline's relations ship with her siblings was bad and that was a magor focus point in this story. Those are my two details that support the theme "family relationships" for the story "chinese cinderella".
I have to disagree for when you said she is lonlely and noone every accolades her or praises her. I disagree because, her dad would praise her because it says in the story that when she came home with a badge her dad praised her for the first time since she was born. That shows she was accoladed by someone before.
Resonding to: Shawna I disagree on what you said because you said her classmates and teachers are the obnly people encouraging her but thats not true because at some moments Adeline's dad praises her.
I believe the most valuable theme of Chinese Cinderella is courage. This is because for one little girl, Adeline showed me that she can face a lot of things on her own that not even kids my age can do or have even faced in their entire lifetime. When Adeline and her siblings moved to Shanghai to begin a new life with their parents, she was highly capable of taking care of herself. She strongly depended on her Aunt Baba, however, Aunt Baba couldn’t be with her for a remainder of the time. Adeline’s siblings were harmful and disrespectful; Father always ignored her; and she saw Niang as a threat. As a result, I saw this as a way of how Adeline had a lot of determination to find the courage within in order to take care of herself, even at the point where she felt too down to even do anything because others did not tend for her as Aunt Baba did. Another detail from the story to support my answer is that on her first day of school at Sacred Hearts Academy, nobody came to pick her up. They all had forgotten about her. Watching from the sideline as other kids went home with a mother for guidance, she was left stranded. Without a trace of knowing where home is, she was brave enough to attempt in trying to walk there. It was tough for a girl unaware of her new surroundings in a big city, and especially having to review the thought of how much other kids received much more love than what she gets from her family. This part of the book also showed great significance because her character reflects how she shows courage. Lastly, standing up to Niang really defined Adeline’s courage. Adeline was terrified of Niang , but she told Niang that she should stop slapping Little Sister because it was wrong. Niang was furious with Adeline, so she remarked her harshly. This left Adeline completely scared to her veins, but it did show me that even if she knew the consequences, she still did what she thought was right. This is why I think the theme of Chinese Cinderella is courage. For a small girl, Adeline portraited that she contained a lot of bravery.
I believe that the main part is courage. Its like she always has to prove herself to her family just not to get punished. her life shows that she isn't wanted. But when she arrives in Shanghai, she meets better friends than before. They actually care for her and treat her like family.
I think the theme of the story has to be courage. I think the theme of the story is courage because Adeline has to have a lot courage when she's at home. The reason why Adeline has to have a lot of courage at home is because her siblings treat her with disrespect. Adeline had to have a lot of courage because when her big sister saw that Adeline was still wearing her medal she pulled hard on it and choked Adeline. Another thing that takes a lot of courage is staying with her family. She could have ran away since her father left and her step mom, Niang left.
I believe that the theme of “Chinese Cinderella” is courage. I believe that the theme is courage because Adeline goes through a lot of things that is hard to take in for a little girl. One detail from the story is “Nai Nai died from a terrible stroke”. This is an example because Nai Nai was one of the very few people who loved and cared for her. Unlike her siblings who hate her guts. Another detail from the story is “Were moving to Shanghai". This is an example because Adeline is moving to a new house, family, and city. They also move right after Nai Nai death. This is why I believe that the theme for “Chinese Cinderella” is courage.
I believe that “Self-Esteem” is an important theme to the book “Chinese Cinderella”. One detail why I believe that this is an important theme is how she doesn’t get much attention at home [or at least the good kind]. The only way she is actually noticed is when she gets good grades, so she pushes herself towards it. The second detail why I believe that this is an important theme is when Adeline and her sister were in the rickshaw. Adeline was snapped at her sister for no apparent reason. The sister even took the medal away from her, saying that she didn’t deserve that medal. Even when that happened, Adeline still continues to strive hard! The last detail why I believe that “Self-Esteem” is an important theme to the book is when her Nai Nai has passed because of a stroke. I believe this shows self-esteem because even though Nai Nai is one of the few people in her family that actually pay attention to her [in a good way], and she has passed, she still is optimistic in what she does.
To me, I think that the theme of this story is loneliness. I think that the theme is loneliness because Adeline has to face all these hardships by herself. She has to stand alone with no one guiding her on what to do. She has no support from any of her family members, and even if she does accomplish something barely anyone in her family awards her for what she has done. She only gets a "pat on the head/shoulder" by her father, and he barely tells her stuff like "good job". When she gets awarded by her father it's only once in a blue moon. While reading through Chapter four and beyond, she get's teased, beaten, and even pushed around by her own family members. For an example in the story, when she finishes school one day, she waited very patiently for someone to pick her up from her school, no one showed up. Lastly, in the story when Adeline moves away and meets up with her father, she has to move away from Aunt Baba for a little while. During that time period, Adeline had no one to talk too. Aunt Baba was the only person that seemed to "like" Adeline. Adeline seemed comfortable talking to Aunt Baba, and that was the only person she could trust. So when Adeline moves away, she's all alone again. Adeline's siblings treat her as if she wasn't that important, her family members show her no attention, no care and no love.
