Well living here in Italy is very different from Hawaii. Duh. The people, language, weather, money, time, etc. The time difference here is 12 hours ahead from Hawaii. So as it's 6:04 PM here, it's 6:04 AM there. And of course the people and language is different. Not a melting pot of ethnicites like Hawaii. And mainly everyone either speaks Italian or English. Mostly Italian. Now the weather is the biggest change because here it actually gets COLD outside. I mean I actually own a winter coat. The coldest weather I was in was, New Salem Massachuessets and it was 50 degrees out. Some moron was in their short sleeved shirt and shorts in that weather! However, Italy is not as cold since it hasn't started snowing. Which it will. The main shock to me is that I have to endure other seasons rather than sunshine and a little rain. So while you guys get to be on the beach this christmas, I'll be bundle up in 50 coats freezing my bum off in the snow. Oh well it might be worth it. I haven't seen much of Italy yet. Only the base, which is pretty small, and the backs of my eyelids since I've been so tired from jet lag. Nah, I'm kidding. I got to see the Alps when I was on the plane over, the roads of Verona to the base, Camp Ederle. Yesterday was the first time my family and I walked of base. The food provided on the base was closed so we had to walk the streets of Vicenza to find a resturaunt to eat at. Last night we enjoyed some nice, (yes you guessed it), Chinese food. I know right? First night in Italy and you eat Chinese food?!?! Why wouldn't you go to an Italian resturaunt? Well most of the signs are written in Italian, so since we don't know how to speak Italian we went to Hong Kong's. The only Italian thing I got to enjoy was their chocolate and coffee vending machines. Yes, they actually hav vending machines where you can pick out what kind of hot beverage you'd like, maybe a hot cocoa or some coffee and then it makes it right there infront of your face and then you grab the cup and drink it. Wellah! To buy stuff it says the price in Euros, but on base you can pay using dollars. Although if you pay with dollars off base they charge you more. In that case it's easier to pay in Euros. I'd have to say the coolest thing I say so far is the Italian Villas I saw on our walk to Hong Kong's. Just imagine a dark block guarded but stone pillars and black pointed gates. Inside lies old european brick buildings surrounded by untrimed grass and shurbery. It has a very vampirish feel to it. Maybe it doesn't sound as cool written or explained, but it was very neat to see, if you like architecture. I haven't gone to school yet. (Haha, no homework for me.) And I'm kind of nervous about it, since I'll be the new kid and not know what goes on in a new school especially in Italy. Hopefully mostly everyone will speak English. Because a lot of people I have met speak Italian and have Italian accents. Anyways the school is really close, I could walk to it. I'll have to since we don't have a car and my parents need to get Italian liscenses in order to drive. I think it's to the right of the building and you'd have to walk to the very end of the road going only straight. Whereas the high school is right across the street from where I am staying. Well if you have any questions, ask 'em. Ciao!
What a pleasant surprise to hear from you so soon! Thank you for writing to share your first impressions of Italy; we can visualize it thanks to your word choice.
Madison definitely feels the loss of your presence, but she's doing the best she can to show bravery. We all miss you!
As you can see from earlier posts on the blog, we've started a new project where we create online GLOGs. Just yesterday we were saying that if you created a glog, you could post videos and pictures of yourself and we could really SEE what Italy is like!
If you are game to try this, email me (via the website or Snapgrades) and I can give you a login and password. It's really easy and everyone has been coming up with some amazing projects.
Once I create your account, the team can see your posters and you can see everyone's creations!
I am confident that when you start school, you will fit right in and continue to excel since you are an astute young lady!
